Ateneo de Manila University — one of the oldest Jesuit-administered institutions of higher education in the Asia-Pacific — traces its origins to 1859, when Spanish Jesuits took over a small public school called Escuela Municipal de Manila. It was later renamed Ateneo Municipal in 1865 as it expanded into secondary education, and eventually became Ateneo de Manila after transitioning into a private institution.
