FCA reports (second) fake company register site
For the second time in as many months, UK financial regulator The FCA has warned the public about an unauthorized clone of its website.
The websites have apparently been set up in an attempt to get people searching for information on FCA licensed persons and companies to leave certain personal information. The scammers can then later follow up with those people and try to extract money in a variety of ways, ranging from promises to help them with claims against FCA-licensed companies, to outright blackmail.
The latest FCA clone site has been set up at www.thefca.net. The FCA stated that it is currently working to get the page taken down.
The last reported attempt at an FCA clone site was in June, when we reported that website https://register.fca.org.uk/ was operating as a (supposed) search of the FCA directory. We would note that despite the FCA’s attempts to get that site taken down, six weeks later it is still up and operating.
