Russian authorities take action against Apple over App Store payment options
The Russian Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) today announced the launch of a case against Apple over alleged violations of antitrust laws. The company has failed to comply with earlier warnings by FAS.
Let’s recall that, in August 2021, FAS warned Apple that it has to stop violating antimonopoly laws. The authorities explain that the problem lies in the App Store Review Guidelines (point 3.1) which prohibits developers of iOS apps from informing users of the existence of alternative payment methods. If a developer includes a link, for example, leading to a page offering an alternative payment option, the app will not be allowed on the App Store.
FAS has determined the Apple abuses its dominant position in the market for iOS apps. The company had to amend its policy not later than September 30, 2021. However, Apple has failed to comply.
That is why, FAS has opened a case for alleged violation of antimonopoly laws. If Apple is found guilty of violating the Russian Law on the Protection of Competition, the company may have to pay a fine based on its turnover.
