Rothera secures CFTC approval for first KPI swap
Rothera Exchange and Clearing LLC today announced that the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has approved its filing for a new category of swap tied to a key performance indicator (KPI) of a publicly-listed company (Tesla – TSLA).
This approval paves the way for Rothera to list additional KPI swaps in future, including financial reporting, platform usage and production metrics. The contract is the first of its kind to be approved by the CFTC and will enable a direct way for institutions and intermediaries to manage risks tied to specific measures of company performance.
On the basis of this approval, Rothera’s upcoming corporate KPIs will cover three distinct categories:
- Company Financial Reporting Swaps: Example metrics include earnings, sales, margins and expenses.
- Company Platform Usage Swaps: Example metrics include number of active users, customers, flights and trips.
- Company Production Metric Swaps: Example metrics include units produced and units delivered.
“Today marks a critical step for investors who have been awaiting the expansion of event contract categories to cover new and diversified financial markets use cases. Rothera’s introduction of corporate KPI contracts seeks to offer market participants high utility products as the event contract market matures,” said Tom Chippas, CEO of Rothera. “Corporate KPI contracts allow market participants of all sizes a more precise way to manage risk and exposure to specific business outcomes and performance, positioning Rothera at the forefront driving market evolution.”
The gradual rollout of KPI contracts begins this fall, with platform usage and production contracts being made available through Rothera’s exchange, targeting initial listings ahead of relevant companies’ quarterly reporting dates. As the use cases for event contracts continue to expand, Rothera remains focused on supporting that growth with the reliable infrastructure, transparent markets and rigorous oversight that participants expect from established financial markets.
