SoFi Tech Solutions, Orbi and Mastercard team up to introduce crypto-linked card in Mexico
SoFi Tech Solutions, formerly Galileo, today announced a partnership with Mexican fintech Orbi and Mastercard to launch a crypto-linked card program in Mexico.
The program will let Orbi customers use either traditional fiat currency or funds from their crypto balances through a seamless conversion at the time of purchase, while merchants receive traditional fiat currency.
SoFi Tech Solutions will provide the BIN sponsorship and financial technology infrastructure behind the Orbi card program, including issuing, transaction authorization, processing and compliance capabilities. Partnering with SoFi and its SoFiUSD stablecoin, provided a unique solution that brought all the components together. The platform will also support future stablecoin-powered use cases.
“Mexico is one of the world’s largest remittance markets, and stablecoins are becoming an increasingly important way to move money across its borders,” said Kathleen Pierce-Gilmore, President of SoFi Tech Solutions. “Together with Orbi and Mastercard, we are giving people in Mexico a trusted way to receive, hold and spend digital dollars, while laying the foundation for stablecoin-powered payments and cross-border money movement at scale.”
The partnership will let Orbi customers make purchases with physical and virtual cards linked to their crypto balances, with funds converted at the point of sale so merchants receive fiat currency. SoFi Tech Solutions’ connection to Mastercard’s domestic payment network in Mexico, Mexico Domestic Switch (MxDS), will support card purchases and cash withdrawals at ATMs.
“The Orbi Mastercard is the result of our collaboration with SoFi Tech Solutions and Mastercard, a partnership that has continued to deepen since our earliest days,” said Leonardo Perez, Co-founder of Orbi. “We are building an experience that turns digital dollars into real-world purchasing power, giving people in Mexico a familiar way to use their assets wherever Mastercard is accepted.”
“Digital assets are becoming an increasingly important part of how people hold and move money, and the opportunity is to make them as easy and trusted to use as traditional forms of payment,” adds Silvana Hernández, North Division President for Mastercard LATAM. “By working with SoFi Tech Solutions and Orbi, we’re enabling stablecoin settlement while helping connect digital assets to the payment experiences people already know, with the security and widespread acceptance of the Mastercard network.”
