Coinbase partners with Moov to bring stablecoin payments and custody to community banks and credit unions
Coinbase and Moov today announced their partnership to give community banks stablecoin capabilities: acceptance, settlement, and real-time funding, built directly into the core systems these banks already use.
Moov provides payments infrastructure to a growing customer base of more than 1,000 community banks and credit unions across the country, connecting them to card acquiring and issuing, and real-time payment rails.
Through this partnership, Moov is integrating Coinbase’s stablecoin payments infrastructure into its existing payments platform, giving financial institutions a path to add stablecoin capabilities without building a separate crypto technology stack from scratch. Using CDP’s Custodial Wallet accounts for fund custody and the Payments API to orchestrate stablecoin movement, Moov can embed crypto rails directly into its existing product.
The infrastructure will support use cases including consumer stablecoin payments, merchant acceptance, merchant settlement, and payouts. For business and merchant-related payments, Moov will also use Coinbase’s fully disclosed custodial accounts.
The division of labor is straightforward: Coinbase provides the regulated digital asset infrastructure, while Moov connects those capabilities to the payments infrastructure financial institutions and their customers already use. That makes stablecoin capabilities accessible to institutions that aren’t going to build and operate an entirely new technology stack themselves.
Ryan VanGrack, Vice Chair and Head of Corporate Affairs, Coinbase, commented:
“Community banks and credit unions have witnessed their customers use digital assets for years. Through our partnership with Moov, Coinbase is delivering the regulated infrastructure they need to offer these services directly—embedded right into their existing systems. Modern tech should meet local institutions where they are, giving them the tools to compete with the largest players while preserving what makes them trusted pillars of their communities.”
Wade Arnold, Co-Founder and CEO, Moov, said:
“Business customers of community institutions are already being asked to accept stablecoins, and today they go outside their institution to do it. We built this so the answer comes from their primary FI instead. Merchants need acceptance and disbursement now. What comes next is bigger: funding that doesn’t stop for weekends or holidays, because the rail doesn’t close. Institutions that add this now will be positioned for both.”
Jill Castilla, Chairman, President, & CEO, Citizens Bank, added:
“Citizens Bank of Edmond has spent 125 years listening to Main Street businesses. Community banks like ours innovate by solving the problems we hear in our lobby. At Citizens, we’ve built patented ATM technology, launched festivals and business incubators, and developed systems for small business support in national crises. Today, our small business customers are looking for ways to lower interchange costs and get paid faster.”
The partnership between Coinbase and Moov will bring community banks the technology to stay relevant with Main Street while providing small businesses the opportunity to compete with the largest. Keeping those dollars connected to community banks matters because local deposits become the next equipment purchase, restaurant expansion, or new venture.
