DEA CFO Jeffrey Sutton named Executive Director of CFTC
U.S. derivatives markets regulator The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has announced the appointment of Jeffrey Sutton as the CFTC’s Executive Director. Mr. Sutton joined the CFTC on April 10.
In this role, Jeffrey Sutton is responsible for directing key programs essential to the administration and management of the CFTC housed within the Division of Administration (DA). DA is comprised of branches that manage the agency’s human capital, information technology, financial management, administrative services and business operations, information and physical security, and enterprise risk management.
“With his career in government service spanning more than 20 years, Jeff brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in core areas of agency management to the CFTC as well as a strong commitment to public service,” said CFTC Chairman Rostin Behnam. “As a key member of our leadership team, Jeff will be a strategic partner in providing advice and direction in enhancing and optimizing the design and execution of the CFTC programs and operations that support our workforce and ensure that we maintain excellence in pursuit of our mission and strategies.”

Prior to joining the CFTC, Jeffrey Sutton served as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) where he oversaw financial operations with budgetary resources of more than $3.6 billion and over 9,000 employees in 300 offices around the world. During his time at the DEA, Mr. Sutton focused on using data to help senior leaders make informed budget and program decisions, finding innovative ways to optimize resources, and creating a culture that embraced and leveraged diversity.
Mr. Sutton also served for eight years at the Department of Justice where he held various positions on the Justice Management Division’s budget staff. In addition, he was a program examiner at the Office of Management and Budget, and a research analyst at the Smithsonian Institute.
Mr. Sutton holds an MPA from Virginia Tech, an MA in Psychology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and a BA in Psychology from California University of Pennsylvania.
