Dr. George Theocharides appointed as Chairman of CEMA
The Chairman of the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC) Dr. George Theocharides has been appointed chairman of the Committee for Economic and Markets Analysis (CEMA). The committee is part of the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), the EU’s securities markets regulator.
CEMA contributes to ESMA’s mission by monitoring developments in financial markets, assessing systemic risks, and providing economic background analysis for the general tasks of ESMA. This includes regular reporting of trends, and potential risks and vulnerabilities in European Union financial markets across borders and sectors.
Dr. Theocharides said: “I am honoured to have been appointed to this role, which reflects Cyprus’s ongoing commitment to contributing to the healthy development of the financial markets in Europe, encouraging innovation and ensuring investor protection.”
Dr. Theocharides will stand as Chairman of the Committee until 31st December 2022.
Dr Theocharides was appointed as CySEC Chairman in September 2021, succeeding Ms Demetra Kalogerou.
Prior to that, Dr Theocharides served as CySEC’s Vice Chairman, and was previously a CySEC Board member. As Associate Professor of Finance at the Cyprus International Institute of Management (CIIM) and Director of the MSc in its Financial Services Programme from September 2010 until July 2020, he has extensive professional experience in the financial sector.
Before taking office at the CIIM, he worked as Assistant Professor of Finance at Sungkyunkwan University in South Korea, from 2006 until 2010. In 2006, he also worked as International Faculty Fellow at the Sloan School of Management of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Previously, he served as a member of the Bank of Cyprus Interim Board and Board Chairman of Cyprus Blockchain Technologies Ltd, among others.
