XM.com’s Costas Cleanthous takes stake in Cyprus newspaper Phileleftheros
Fresh off of his takeover of Cyprus bank Ancoria earlier this year, XM.com founder and controlling shareholder Costas Cleanthous has apparently taken a major stake in another Cypriot institution, becoming an investor in the EU island nation’s oldest and most-widely-read Greek-language newspaper, Phileleftheros.
Phileleftheros ran a pair of articles over the weekend effectively announcing that Costas Cleanthous had become a “strategic investor” in the company, without providing exact details as to the size of his investment nor to his exact stake in the company. The newspaper ran an article authored by Mr. Cleanthous himself entitled Costas Cleanthous: With respect to its past, but with its eyes fixed on the future, Phileleftheros will continue, first, to write history. The other article, a longer interview with Mr. Cleanthous, carried the title Kostas Cleanthous: The values and ideals that defined my path as an entrepreneur and as a person, and reviews the history of XM, and his more recent pursuits of Ancoria Bank and now Phileleftheros.
Costas Cleanthous also owns the The Forest Park Hotel in Cyprus.
The articles seem to indicate that Mr. Cleanthous will indeed have control of Phileleftheros, and be able to influence its editorial direction, with statements such as “Phileleftheros is about to evolve.”
